Kennedy Half Grading

GRADING Kennedy Halves

Grades
Very Fine shows wear spots on the hair below the part and along the cheek and jaw.  The hairlines are weak but have nearly full details.  On the reverse, wear shows on the arrow points but some details are visible. All central tail feathers are plain.
Extremely Fine has slight wear on the cheek, along the jawbone and on high points of the hair below the part. Hairlines are sharp and detailed. The high points of the arrows and right wing tip are lightly worn. Central tail feathers are worn.
About Uncirculated will show only a trace of wear on the highest points of the cheek, jawbone and hair below the part. A trace of wear shows on the central tail feather. Nearly all of the mint luster is still present.
Uncirculated (MS60) has no trace of wear, but with minor blemishes. It has full mint luster, but the surface may be dull, spotted or heavily toned. Check for signs of abrasion on the high points of the cheek and jawbone, center of neck, hair below part.
Uncirculated Choice (MS65) has no trace of wear except for some small blemish. It has full mint luster but may be unevenly toned or lightly finger marked. A few barely noticeable nicks or marks may be present.

With Kennedy Halves still being minted, you can find some wonderful coins in the Uncirculated grades for relatively little money. There are a few hard to come by pieces and current date coins are almost impossible to find in circulation.

There were significant changes to the obverse in 1991. The later date coins have better defined hair lines and features, which is noticible in the proof that is featured. Note that the 1971-D doesn't have nearly the definition in the hair as the 1999-S.

The focal points for grading are on the high points of the cheek and jawbone, center of neck and hair below part. On the reverse, check the bundle of arrows, center tail feather and right wing tip.

Kennedy Half Obverse BU

When examining a coin for wear, check the high points of the coin which are the cheek and jawbone, center of neck and hair below part. On this uncirculated coin there is absolutely no trace of wear and all details show clearly.

Kennedy Half Reverse BU

On the reverse, check the bundle of arrows, center tail feather and right wing tip.

Kennedy Half Obverse in Extra Fine Grade

On the obverse of the 1971-D, slight wear shows on the cheek, on the hair below the part and on the date. A close look shows the coin is pretty banged up with lots of nicks.

Kennedy Half Reverse in Extra Fine Grade

The reverse of the XF shows a slight amount of wear on the center tail feather. The bottom of the arrows show noticeable wear but the tops of the arrows are fairly clear.

1999 Silver Proof

This proof version of the coin shows the changes that were made to the obverse starting in 1991. Notice that the hairlines show much more detail and the profile is much sharper then in earlier years. While the Uncirculated version of the coin looks similar, this proof coin helps to display the changes more clearly.
