Grading Morgan Silver Dollars

GRADING Morgan Silver Dollars

Grades
Good is heavily worn. The design and legend are visible but fain in spots.
Very Good is well worn. The design is clear but flat and lacks details.
Fine shows moderate to heavy even wear. The entire design is clear and bold. The hairline along the face is clearly defined. The eagles head, neck and breast are flat.
Very Fine has light to moderate even wear. All major features are sharp. Wear shows on the high points of the hair from the forehead to the ear. Some strands are visible in the hair above the ear. Wear shows on the tips of the eagle's wings.
Extremely Fine shows slight wear on the hair above the forehead and ear. The lines in the hair are well detailed and sharp. The edges of the cotton leaves will show slight wear as will the cheek. The highest point of the eagle's breast is lightly worn.
About Uncirculated has slight traces of wear on the hair above the ear and eye. The edges of the cotton leaves and high upper fold of the cap will show a trace of wear. Luster will be fading from the cheek.
Uncirculated has no trace of wear, but may have bag marks and abrasions. Small rim marks and weakly struck spots may exist. It should have full mint luster but may lack brilliance and the surface may be spotted or heavily toned.

The focus of grading on the obverse is in the hair above the eye and ear, edges of cotton leaves, and the high upper fold of the cap. The cheek is also taken into consideration for luster and wear. The obverse focuses on the eagle's breast, tops of legs and the talons.

Morgan Obverse Uncirculated

Check for wear in the hair above the eye and ear, edges of cotton leaves, and the high upper fold of the cap. Also look at the cheek for luster and wear.

Notice the hairlines are well defined and show no wear. The folds in the cap are well defined and the cheek shows no wear but does have some minor nicks.

Morgan Reverse Uncirculated

The obverse focuses on the eagle's breast, tops of legs and the talons.

The feathers show all the detail on the breast and tops of the legs. The talons are well defined and show no wear. There is no wear on the leaves of the wreath.

Morgan Obverse Very Fine

This coin shows noticable wear on the high points of the hair from the forehead to the ear. Some strands are visible in the hair above the ear but most of the detail is gone. You can also see wear on the folds of the cap and the cotton leaves.

It is not noticable from the scan but the coin has a flat appearance.

Morgan Reverse Very Fine

Wear shows on the tips of the eagle's wings and only a few feathers are visible on the breast and head. Also note the wear on the eagles legs and talons. Wear also shows on the leaves of the wreath.
