The focus of grading on the obverse is on the headband, actually the letters in the headband, hair above the ear and the curl to the right of the ribbon. The reverse check the bow knot and leaves for wear.
It should be noted that coins minted from 1886 through the early 1900's will have poorly defined feathertips on Liberty's headdress and diamonds on the ribbon.
The 1908-S and 1909-S cents are subject to streaks resembling wood grain, which is the result of poor alloy mixture.

Indian Head Cent Obverse Fine
Fine grades have moderate to even wear. The entire design is clear and bold. One quarter of the details show in the hair. The ribbon is worn smooth. The complete "LIBERTY"shows clearly.
This copper-nickel variety allows you to see the wear much better then a bronze coin would. Note the wear on the tips of the feathers, hair and ribbon. While the "LIBERTY" is complete, it is weak in spots and shows wear. The beads on the necklace are worn smooth but still have some definition.
Indian Head Cent Reverse Fine
On the reverse, the tops of the leaves are worn smooth. Some details are visible in the wreath and bow. You can see how the wear has flattened the details of the wreath on this coin.
