Grading Eisenhower Dollars

GRADING Eisenhower Dollars

Grades
Very Fine will have wear spots on the hair below the part. The hairlines are weak but have nearly full details. Wear spots will also show on the cheek, jaw, center of neck and along the edge of the bust. The reverse shows wear on the head, wings and legs.
Extremely Fine shows slight wear on the cheek, along the jawbone and on the high points at the edge of the bust. The hairlines are sharp and detailed. The reverse has wear on the high points of the head, legs and wing ridges.
About Uncirculated will show a trace of wear on the highest points of the jawbone and at the center of the neck on the base of the bust. The reverse shows a trace of wear on the high points of feathers in the wings and legs.
Uncirculated has no trace of wear and has full mint luster. The surfaces may be dull, spotted or heavily toned.

It should be noted that several revisions were made to the design of the Copper-Nickel clad coins during 1971 and 1972. It wasn't until 1973 that acceptable strikes were achieved. Due to poor workmanship, Philadelphia coins aren't nearly as nice as the Denver issues.

The 1973-S and 1974-S Silver Clad will display the best strike as they benefited from two years of refinement of the design. While gems are common for these coins, light contact marks or abrasions are often found.

In the Bicentennial coins, the 1976-D was minted with greater care and is of better quality then the Philadelphia coins. The Silver-clad dollars were never bagged, so their quality is typically excellent.

Grading of the obverse focuses on the high points of the cheek and jawbone, center of the neck and edge of the bust. On the reverse check the eagle's head, high points of ridges and feathers in the wings and legs.

Please note, I've lightened the scans of the coins in hope of showing the details more clearly.

Eisenhower Dollar Obverse - BU

On the Uncirculated Obverse notice the hairlines are well defined, especially below the part. The cheek, jawbone and center of the neck show no signs of wear. The base of the neck is nicely defined with no signs of wear.

Eisenhower Dollar Obverse - Extremely Fine

The hairlines on this Extremely Fine example are sharp and detailed. It does show slight wear on the cheek and along the jawbone. Wear at the edge of the bust is noticeable and has roundness to it rather then the sharp lines.

Eisenhower Dollar Reverse - BU

On the reverse of the uncirculated coin the eagle's head is well defined and the eye and beak show all details. The high points of ridges and feathers in the wings show no wear. The feathers on the legs are clearly defined.

Eisenhower Dollar Reverse - Extremely Fine

The reverse of this extremely fine coin shows wear on the head with the eye no longer visible. The feathers in the wings and legs have some loss of detail. The wing and leg ridges are lightly worn.
