Grading Coins

Coin Grading

The hilited areas show the focal points used when grading the Morgan Silver Dollar. This coin is graded MS64 and shows clearly what the areas should look like.

This is such an overwhelming topic, you would be wise to pick your favorite coin and become familiar with how to grade it. My favorite book is the ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins. It has great detail on each grade of a specific coin. My other favorite source is the local coin dealer. They are often more then willing to share information with you. And then there is the Web, check out these sites.

COIN GRADING by Scott Travers

Scott Travers has published a number of books on Coin Collecting and now has a web site. Check out his site at COINGRADING.COM for detailed insight to how coins are graded.

ACOIN Coin Grading Page

The other interesting site I found is from ACOIN. Here you'll find a grading page, which uses various Liberty Head (Mercury) Dimes. It is very informative for a quick glimpse into coin grading.

Buy the Book, Understand the Coin

From Coin Universe, an interesting article on coin collecting. It has references to many books that are helpful to the coin collector.

Examining Contact Marks on Coins

Contact marks can occur on coins in many ways. When business-strike coins are ejected from the coining dies, they drop into a container. In 1792, this was a small receptacle; today, large hoppers are used for this purpose.
