When grading the obverse of Barber dimes, the high points of the cheek and hair below LIBERTY should be examined for signs of wear and abrasion. On the reverse check the ribbon bow and tips of leaves, especially the leaf near the O in ONE.
Barber Dime Obverse - Uncirculated
When grading the obverse of Barber dimes, the high points of the cheek and hair below LIBERTY should be examined for signs of wear. Notice on this coin the hair details are full and well defined underneath LIBERTY. LIBERTY is sharp and the band edges are bold. There is good definition in the bottom row of leaves and they show distinctly from the hairlines. The folds in the cap are well defined and the ribbon shows full details. The cheek is clear and there is no sign of wear on this coin. This coin grades Uncirculated.
Barber Dime Obverse - Very Fine
Notice the flatness of the cheek and the loss of definition on the jaw below the ear. The hair below LIBERTY is worn almost smooth. Some of the leaves on the bottom row are weak but visible. LIBERTY is clear and the band is complete but weak. The bow in the back has lost some of its detail as well as the folds in the cap. This coin would grade Very Fine.
Barber Dime Reverse - Uncirculated
When grading the reverse check the ribbon bow and tips of leaves, especially the leaf near the O in ONE. The reverse of this uncirculated coin doesnt show the slightest of wear. The wheat grains and corn kernels have strong details. The oak and maple leaves are well defined. The leaf closest to the O has full details. The ribbon and bow dont show any wear.
Barber Dime Reverse - Very Fine
The reverse of this Very Fine coin does show wear spots on the two bottom leaves with most details are visible. Nearly all the detail in the ribbon bow is clear but it appears somewhat flat. The wheat grains and corn kernels have nearly all the detail but do show wear. The leaf nearest the O shows a loss of some of the finer details. The letters in the legend are not nearly as strong as the uncirculated coin.
